Starring the voicing talents of Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, James Brolin, and more. Lightyear was a nice, refreshing surprise. I was slightly skeptical upon hearing that Chris Evans would be replacing Tim Allen as the voice of Buzz Lightyear because Tim Allen’s voice as the plastic space ranger is a classic. The film’s opening title card helped put me at ease though, explaining that the Buzz action figure owned by Andy was a toy from his favorite movie and this was supposed to be that movie. So, it was the literal movie that the Buzz Lightyear action figure was made from. I thought that was a pretty neat take.
The film was through and through a fun viewing that the whole family could sit back and enjoy. It combined action/adventure, sci fi, and your typical silly kid’s humor that you can expect with every Pixar movie. Also adding in elements of time travel and personal loss and grief in an easy to digest fashion. Don’t go in expecting this to be another extension of the Toy Story series though because that it is not. Aside from the actual Buzz Lightyear being the main character and Zurg playing the antagonist, this has nothing to do with the Toy Story’s which I personally found to be refreshing.
It introduced a brand-new set of characters and brought on brand new peril that the group had to overcome to succeed, all while giving us a deeper back story on the space rangers that Buzz Lightyear holds so near and dear to him and his personality. All in all, I’d say the film served its purpose. It was a fun theater experience, the animated space scenes were mesmerizing, it’s an easy watch, and the sci fi action keeps adults entertained all while finding ways to slip in jokes and wisecracks to keep the kids attention. To Infinity and Beyond!
