NFL Updatez: After Week 6 of the 2026 season

San Francisco 49ers defensive back Siran Neal (33) and teammates celebrate a fumble recovery during an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026 in Santa Clara, California.

Well, can you believe it? We are already 6 weeks into the 2026 NFL season! As usual, it is flying by and leaving me sad with each passing week that goes by. My favorite times of the year coincides with my favorite sports season which I’m sure is in part why it flies by so quick. Before I ramble on too much about how much my life is flying by, we may as well get into it because what a freaking season it has been so far! You know I always lead these posts talking about my personal fandoms before getting into the rest of the league and thank goodness for that so I can just get this out of the way from the top. The Cowboys defense still looks like it stinks and they consistently make me want to rip my hair out on a week-to-week basis when they are on the field. I just do not understand it man.

It’s not for lack of effort. If you read my Week 1 blog from last month I talked about all of the moves they made for their defense between trades, the draft, and new signings. All the way up to the coordinator himself (which certainly needed to happen), and since then we’ve even went out and acquired a shiny new toy in the pretty elite defensive back, Joey Porter Jr. from the Steelers. Yet still, it kind of feels like a shit show waiting to happen when you put the product on the field. I know so many of these players on our defense this year and the potential they hold so it’s just so frustrating and makes no sense when the product doesn’t deliver on the field. I guess I could say the same for the offense these last couple of games because they’ve really taken a slide as well from the first 4 weeks, but I have faith they can steer the ship straight still. I can’t say that for the defense really at this point. Our one saving grace is being part of an NFC East that looks like it’s going to be pretty dang weak this season. The Commanders are 1-3-1 and Jayden Daniels is already dealing with the dislocated elbow situation that he dealt with last season, the Giants are looking okay at 3-2-1 but Jaxson Dart already went down with a season-ending injury and Cam Skattebo has had some fumble woes this season that left him without seeing a SINGLE touch in their last game against the Saints. Then there’s our ultimate rival, the Eagles, who also feel like they’re going to be in for a pretty long and rough season this year and are sitting at 2-4 alongside the Boys currently. Jalen Hurts is dealing with some scary blood clot situation though and they found some in his lungs now apparently as well and he’s been placed on season-ending IR. Above all rivalry and dislike for the Eagles I may have, I really just hope for a full recovery for Jalen and that we get to see him back out on the field again next year. That’s scary stuff man.

The Vikings and the 49ers are sitting atop the entire NFC though and are both currently still undefeated at 5-0. We shall see if the Niners can keep that going here momentarily as their MNF game against the Commanders will be coming on soon as I type this. It makes sense that the Niners are one of the league’s undefeated teams though, they have looked nothing short of incredible this season on both sides of the ball and once again, they are already injured as hell. It just doesn’t seem to matter to them. Brock Purdy is also playing some of the best and most efficient ball of his entire career up to this point of the year and has my early contender for MVP right now. The Vikings have still had many, many offensive woes and really don’t look that impressive at all on that side of the ball, but their defense is really just that damn good that they keep winning them games. Opponents are averaging like 12 points a game against the Vikings right now, that’s crazy. The NFC North in general looks like it’s going to be a dog fight to the end between the Vikings, Packers, Lions, and Bears who all look very good currently. I’ve said it before but overall, I think that may be the best coached division in the NFL right now. All their head coaches feel like football savants in their own sorts of styles and ways. The Panthers look like they have a decent chance to take the NFC South this year if they keep playing the way they have. Bryce Young has been dialed in like crazy this year and I love to see it with my whole heart. Prove those haters wrong my dude. The Falcons have also sneakily looked like a very different and competitive football team this season when Michael Penix has been on the field leading the offense. He’s really having a bounce back now that he’s healthy as well.

The NFC West is really interesting because you have the Niners, Rams, and Super Bowl reigning Seahawks all in the same division. The Rams came into the year with a lot of hype and many shiny new pieces on the defense, but they’ve really been struggling and feeling some woes as well. Myles Garett and Aaron Donald have still yet to be on the field together, right? And now, Davante Adams just got an injury that’s going to see him missing significant time. They’re also 2-4 currently, welcome to the 2-4 club Rams. The Chiefs are currently the only undefeated team in the AFC at 5-0 since they’ve already had their bye, but the Bills and especially Josh Allen are still looking as incredible as ever as well and sit at 5-1. There have been some surprisingly good teams in the AFC this year though, and some of the very worst teams in the league come from the AFC as well this season. At least so far. In the AFC West there’s the undefeated Chiefs being led by newly acquired RB Kenneth Walker III who’s been playing like a stud so far this year. There’s also the Broncos who are playing well and sitting at 4-2, but like the Vikings that’s mainly due to their defense. Bo Nix has been playing pretty poor so far this year, maybe that’s an understatement. I don’t know if he’s fully healthy and mobile from that ankle injury during the playoffs last year. The Raiders are also playing extremely competitive football this season and sit at 3-3, but 2 of those losses came from the Bills and the Chiefs who they played extremely close. Entirely different looking team this year with Klint Kubiak and Kirko Chains leading the charge.

The Chargers on the other hand look pretty much clueless so far this season and the changes they’ve made don’t look like they’ve been working out at all. Which is crazy because they’re a team with some real weapons and felt like they had hope coming into the year. They’re 0-6, the only winless team in the entire league up to this point still aside from the Dolphins…who look HORRIBLE this year. The Patriots started off the year on a skid after being in the Super Bowl last season, but Drake Maye seems to be finding his footing now and if AJ Brown can get back on track they might be good again this year. They’re 4-2 right now and a game back from the Bills in the AFC East. The Jaguars have also looked great so far this season and could potentially run away with the AFC South depending how much the Texans start turning the ship around after their 0-4 start. Trevor Lawrence is having himself a season. Believe me, I know. I have him on my fantasy team and he’s been one of my few shining stars so far this season. Then there’s the AFC North which may be the weirdest division in football right now.

My boys, the Cleveland Browns are leading the division right now for the first time since 2014 with a 4-2 record! I won’t let you forget this moment in time. Todd Monken and the new coaching staff may really be making some difference over there man. Again though, the Browns are another team that is nothing to write home about offensively, but their defense really is damn good, and that’s without Myles Garrett! I love Myles, true fanboy, but the Browns don’t seem to be missing him too much up to this point. Craziest part is the Ravens and the Steelers are also 4-2 and the Bengals are 3-2 because they’ve had their bye, but the Browns just currently have the best in-division record so they’re in the lead. That just feels like it’s going to be one of the tightest and weirdest divisions down the stretch, unless the Ravens or Bengals just really turn it on or the Browns just really fall off and someone starts running away with it. Hasn’t happened up to this point though.

Well, I think that just about wraps up a lot of the catchup around the league through 6 weeks. It’s already been a weird and wacky season but I enjoy some of these sleeper teams rising from the ashes and making a stand this year. There’s been some surprises and some fun, but also a whole lot of injuries to key players that’s stunted a lot of teams around the league. I’d be having more fun if the Cowboys were playing well but alas, I’m used to being disappointed as a football fan. Won’t give up on my Boys though.
