\"The<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Clayface is a 2026 body-horror\/action film directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, and David Dencik. This is also the 3rd film in James Gunn’s DCU following ‘Superman’ from last year and ‘Supergirl’ earlier this year. This was also co-written by Mike Flanagan who is one of horror’s modern minds in my opinion and someone who’s been responsible for a handful of pretty memorable projects within the horror genre the last handful of years. From miniseries like ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ and ‘Midnight Mass’ and many more, to movies like ‘Oculus’ and ‘Doctor Sleep’, he’s been around and has established himself as one of horror’s modern creative minds. That’s why when I heard his name attached to the project and saw how dark the trailers were looking, I figured we were in for a spookier vibe. Especially with the October release, so let’s get into it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ll just lead this off by saying, I really enjoyed it! This was one of the darkest, most cringe-inducing, violent films set in a comic book universe to date and man, I’m here for it. This isn’t your kid’s comic book movie, and I wouldn’t recommend bringing them. This is a dark and tragic tale about a man losing himself and his identity, quite literally. All the R-Rated superhero\/comic book movies to date have leaned into the silly and absurd in some ways, aside from ‘Joker’, so it was nice to get back to a dark and violent R-Rated comic book film. Leave it to DC and the Batman universe though. It’s another villain origin story and I know some people kind of have a sour taste in their mouth over those and don’t want to see too many of them, I don’t necessarily happen to agree, but this one is very well done. It’s not like the Spiderman villain movies Sony did that everyone hated, like I said when they tend to give Batman villains (the best villains overall in all of the comic book universe) some real time and care when they make films for them. At least if ‘Joker’ and ‘Clayface’ are any indication that is. This movie, like Joker, really lets you buy into the sympathy of the lead character Matt Hagen and you get to witness the torment and injustice he faces that ultimately lead to his spiral out of control. For most of the film though, I got to say, I was really on his side. I mean there comes a time when he’s taking things too far sure, but for the most part it was pretty satisfying for him to get his justice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also enjoyed that I didn’t really recognize anyone in this movie really from other projects, but they all killed it. Especially Tom Rhys Harries who played Matt\/Clayface and Naomi Ackie who played the doctor that treated him. This felt like a breakout performance for Tom in a way though, he was in nearly every scene of the film it felt like and this was fully and entirely his character’s movie and the success of it kind of relied on his ability to portray all the emotions and desperation that he needed to portray as Matt Hagen. The way this movie played out really kind of reminded me of Sam Raimi’s ‘Darkman’ the more time that I’ve had to sit and think about it, and I really enjoyed that film as well. Similar in the fact that both movies had the lead character get roughed by thugs in a situation that left them permanently scarred and altered both physically and emotionally. Big difference is they were basically trying to kill Liam Neeson in ‘Darkman’, and they were just trying to end his stardom and in many ways his way of life by leaving him permanently scarred in ‘Clayface’. Both are tales of revenge in many ways as well and carry a sort of dirty city, back alley, noir vibe about them in the ways they were shot also. Kind of interesting the more I think on it. Even the gauze wrapped all over Matt’s face covering all of it aside from his eyes and mouth was very similar to Darkman, but this film carries a more grounded tone with it it felt like whereas Darkman was more fantastical and comic-booky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joked after this film that Gotham City has never had a sunny day. This film really leaned into the smoggy, dirty, back alley, flickering neon signs side of Gotham and that helped with its noir vibe as well. As I kind of mentioned before as well, this was one of the most violent\/cringe-inducing comic book movies we’ve ever gotten. The body-horror scenes with Matt as he slowly transforms into Clayface and some of the things he experiences along the way will truly make you wince and grit your teeth and want to look away, but you can’t. At least I couldn’t. Also, some of the deaths in this movie were pretty damn bloody and violent as Matt started to understand more of his abilities as Clayface. Matt’s story was one of vengeance and losing himself along the way as he got it, but the other side of the film was like a detective-drama as this good cop working for the dirty Gotham PD was hot on the trail of Matt and this mob situation and wouldn’t back off like the other paid off cops would. That’s what helped this movie continue to feel more realistic and not necessarily like a superhero film to me, because even though what was happening to our lead character was rather fantastical in a sense, they kept the story and the tone more grounded and on a street level. I could continue to ramble on about this movie, but I honestly don’t want to talk and give too much away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
